great beaches

Southend

Southend's pier is one and a half miles long. Back in the 1920's 17 pleasure steamers a day would moor here on day trips from the medway towns and other local coastal towns. Having walked the pier's length on a sunny saturday we were very pleased with ourselves because we had the chance to see the entire seafront and get a good impression of just what an eclectic mix it all is. From the beautifully laid out gardens of Westcliff and the sedate fishermen on the pier to the frenetic pace of the seafront adventure park, there is something for everyone in Southend. The sandiest beaches are best if you head downstream (of you are on land, facing the pier you need to go left along the seafront) but beware of tides which are strong here.

You really should walk the pier if you are up to the challenge. The views of the coast are great and you can see the massive offshore wind farm in the distance. I was less than impressed by the cafe at the end and don't recommend it to you. Instead, walk around the little lifeboat station, buy a souvenir to help the charity and than take the tiny electric train all the way back to dry land.
